The Telephone Wire Basket Collection

Handwoven in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

These vibrant, handwoven baskets are a modern expression rooted in Zulu tradition. For generations, Zulu artisans have been known for both skill in crafting baskets from native grasses and their iconic beadwork. Today, that same artistry lives on in a contemporary material, steel core telephone wire.

The origins of this craft are as resourceful as they are creative. It’s said the idea came from night-shift security workers in South African factories, who passed the time by wrapping colourful wire around their batons. What began as a way to pass time became a whole new form of artistic expression.

Each basket in this collection is intricately woven by hand in KwaZulu-Natal, using an intricate weaving technique that begins at the rim and works downward over a form - unlike most traditional baskets, which are built from the bottom up. The result is a piece that’s both contemporary and deeply connected to its cultural roots. No two are exactly alike; each is a reflection of the maker’s hand.

This collection marks the beginning of Mzokisi’s journey, an introduction to our vision of bringing contemporary South African craft to a global audience. By launching with this collection, we honour the spirit of innovation, resilience, and artistry that defines South African craft. They are not just decorative objects, but a celebration of heritage made for modern living.
